Rising Trend of Hoax Bomb Threats
Recently, there has been a surge in hoax bomb threats targeting airports and hospitals. On June 18, 41 airports, including those in Jaipur, Chennai, and Varanasi, received bomb threats via email. These threats led to hours of extensive security checks, but all turned out to be false alarms.
Such hoax threats severely disrupt flight operations, requiring detailed inspections of passengers, their luggage, and the aircraft itself. To address this issue, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has suggested a five-year flying ban for individuals caught making false threats.
On August 22, Thiruvananthapuram Airport was put on high alert after a bomb threat was received concerning an Air India flight arriving from Mumbai. The flight, which landed at 8 a.m., was rerouted to an isolation bay, and all 135 passengers were safely evacuated by 8:44 a.m. The threat was reported by the pilot as the plane approached the airport around 7:30 a.m.
On June 17, a 13-year-old boy was detained for allegedly sending a false bomb threat email to Delhi Airport, claiming a bomb was planted on a Dubai-bound flight. The airport authorities declared an emergency, and Indira Gandhi International Airport was put on high alert.
Additionally, about 60 hospitals across Mumbai received hoax bomb threats via email. The Mumbai police confirmed that both private and public hospitals were targeted, with the emails sent through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to the hospitals’ public email addresses.
