Third Accused Arrested in Hampi Rape Case
Karnataka Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi confirmed on Sunday that the third accused in the horrific Hampi rape case has been arrested.
The minister, who is also the in-charge for Koppal district, stated that three people were involved in the tragic incident. “Three people were involved in this horrific crime, which should never have happened. Two were arrested yesterday, and the third was caught today,” he said.
According to the police, the third suspect had fled to Tamil Nadu after committing the crime and was arrested there.
The disturbing incident took place on March 6 near Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Karnataka. A 27-year-old Israeli tourist and another woman were reportedly gang-raped and assaulted while they were stargazing on the banks of the Tungabhadra canal along with two companions.
Police revealed that three men approached the group that night, claiming they needed directions to a petrol pump. When the tourists said they didn’t know, the men turned violent and robbed them.
During the chaos, one of the tourists got into a verbal confrontation with the attackers. This escalated further, and the assailants forcefully pushed the tourists into the canal.
A 29-year-old homestay operator and one of the female tourists were then sexually assaulted by the accused. Meanwhile, three male tourists were pushed into the canal. While two of them managed to escape, one tourist named Bibash went missing. Tragically, his body was later found.
Authorities have assured that they are committed to ensuring strict action against the culprits and justice for the victims.
