When and Where Are The Presidential Debate?

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump will face off in their first televised debate on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET (0100 GMT on Friday). The debate, held at a CNN studio in Atlanta without a live audience, will also be available on CNN affiliates and can be streamed on CNN.com and other U.S. channels.

The CNN debate, scheduled more than four months before the November 5 election, is the earliest presidential debate in modern U.S. history. ABC will host the second debate on September 10, also from a studio without an audience.

CNN’s debate will be moderated by anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, while ABC’s debate will be moderated by anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis.

Joe Biden Vs Donald Trump Presidential Rules

During Thursday’s 90-minute debate, both candidates will stand at identical podiums equipped with a pen, paper, and a bottle of water, as per CNN guidelines. Props and notes are prohibited.

Microphones will remain muted except for the candidate speaking, with moderators tasked to maintain timing and encourage a respectful exchange, CNN clarified.

Joe Biden will occupy the podium on the right side of the screen, with Donald Trump granted the final remarks following a coin toss. Campaign staff cannot interact with candidates during the two commercial breaks, and no studio audience will be present.

ABC has yet to disclose their debate rules.

What to Expect in Presidential Debate?

U.S. presidential debates are highly anticipated, drawing millions of viewers and often shaping election outcomes. In the upcoming race, both candidates face challenges as they navigate a closely contested campaign amid lukewarm voter enthusiasm.

At ages 81 and 78 respectively, Biden and former President Trump are the oldest contenders for the presidency. Viewers are likely to scrutinize their cognitive sharpness and emotional stability.

Trump’s team sees Biden as prone to verbal missteps that could heighten concerns about his age among voters.

Meanwhile, Biden’s camp believes the debates could expose Trump’s unpredictability and inconsistent stances on issues like abortion, potentially swaying undecided voters.

The Biden campaign aims to focus on abortion issues, while Trump’s team emphasizes immigration. CNN moderators will determine the debate topics, possibly covering challenges such as high grocery prices, immigration issues at the U.S.-Mexico border, and international conflicts involving Israel, Hamas, Russia, and Ukraine.

The debate might also touch on Trump’s involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and his legal issues related to a hush money scheme. Biden’s son Hunter’s legal troubles, including a conviction related to false statements about purchasing a firearm, could also be discussed.

Who Will Attend Presidential Debate?

Campaign staff will be available for post-debate discussions in the “spin room.” While the Biden campaign didn’t confirm if the president will bring guests, California Governor Gavin Newsom is expected. Trump’s campaign plans a watch party in Atlanta, possibly with potential VP candidates like North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Senators Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance as special guests.

What Happened in Past Presidential Debate?

During the 2020 race, Trump and Biden debated twice. Their first debate turned chaotic, drawing over 73 million viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. The second debate featured muted microphones to curb interruptions, resulting in a more orderly discussion. A planned third debate was canceled when Trump contracted COVID-19 and declined a virtual format.
