It’s going to cost a whopping 35 billion US Dollars (around Rs 2.9 lakh crore)! This airport will be massive, with five runways and enough space for 260 million travelers and 400 planes. On April 28, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, gave the green light to a massive project: a new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. This terminal will cost a staggering $34.85 billion and is set to become the world’s largest airport, capable of handling up to 260 million passengers.

It’s a big leap from Dubai International Airport, as the new one will be five times its size! Eventually, all flights in Dubai will operate from Al Maktoum Airport.

Transforming Dubai’s Skyline

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, head of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and CEO of Emirates, announced that the first phase of the project will finish in ten years, and it will handle 150 million passengers each year.

He mentioned that the new airport will become the main hub for Emirates, Flydubai, and other airlines, connecting Dubai globally.

Despite being on the outskirts, Al Maktoum Airport hasn’t attracted much air traffic since 2010. Officials plan for it to take over Dubai International Airport, which is in the city center and can only handle 120 million passengers yearly without further expansion.
