This development follows his recent uncontested election to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. It’s worth noting that Nadda was one of the 57 MPs whose terms were set to conclude in April 2024. As per an official parliamentary bulletin from the Rajya Sabha, his resignation has been duly accepted by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, effective as of March 4, 2024.

JP Nadda Resigns

On March 4th, Jagat Prakash Nadda, who serves as the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), tendered his resignation from his position as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. His decision to step down from the Upper House of Parliament was duly acknowledged and accepted by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankar.

Nadda had been representing the state of Himachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha. Consequently, following his resignation, the seat that Nadda occupied in the Upper House now stands vacant. This development was formally communicated to the public through a press release issued by the Rajya Sabha.

BJP’s Strategic Victory

JP Nadda was one of the 41 candidates who won uncontested seats in the recent Rajya Sabha elections before the important 2024 Lok Sabha polls. He was chosen as the BJP’s candidate from Gujarat, which sent four BJP candidates to the upper house. This decision was made instead of selecting a candidate from Himachal Pradesh, which was ruled by the Congress and where the party’s victory was uncertain.

However, the BJP managed to secure the only Rajya Sabha seat from Himachal after six Congress MLAs voted in its favor. This resulted in a tie, and the BJP eventually won through a dramatic lottery.

Congress candidate Abhishek Singhvi received 34 votes after six Congress lawmakers and three independents who previously supported the government switched sides and supported BJP nominee Harsh Mahajan, who also received 34 votes. The tie was then broken by drawing lots, which favored Mahajan.

In response to the rebellion, the Congress went into damage control mode as it threatened to destabilize the Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu government in the state. Senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and DK Shivakumar were rushed in as observers, recommending that Sukhu remain CM until the general elections to the Lower House.

Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania announced last Thursday that the six MLAs – Sudhir Sharma, Rajinder Rana, Davinder K Bhutto, Ravi Thakur, Chaitanya Sharma, and Inder Dutt Lakhanpal – had been disqualified.
