He then pursued a Bachelor’s degree at Sanatan Dharma College in Kanpur.
In 1939, he moved to Agra to enroll at St. John’s College, aiming to obtain a master’s degree in English literature, but was unable to continue his studies.
Upadhyay’s journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) began in 1937 while studying at Sanatan Dharma College, where he was introduced to the organization by a classmate. During this period, he engaged in intellectual discussions with the RSS founder, K.B. Hedgewar, at gatherings.
In 1942, Upadhyay dedicated himself fully to the RSS and participated in a 40-day summer camp in Nagpur, where he received training in Sangh education. After completing his training in the RSS Education Wing, he became a lifelong pracharak (preacher) of the RSS.
His initial role as pracharak was in Lakhimpur district, Uttar Pradesh, and from 1955, he served as the joint Prant Pracharak for the state. His commitment to the RSS established him as an exemplary swayamsevak, as his views aligned closely with the organization’s core principles.
In the 1940s, Upadhyay launched the monthly magazine Rashtra Dharma in Lucknow to promote Hindutva ideology. He later founded the weekly Panchjanya and the daily Swadesh, further expanding his ideological reach.
In 1951, Syama Prasad Mukherjee established the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), and Upadhyay was appointed by the RSS to collaborate with the party, ensuring its alignment with Sangh Parivar principles. He began as the General Secretary of the BJS in Uttar Pradesh and later became the National General Secretary, serving in this role for an impressive 15 years.
In December 1967, Upadhyay was elected president of the BJS, marking a significant milestone in his political journey. He passed away on February 11, 1968.
