Sharda Sinha, a beloved folk artist from Bihar, passed away on November 5. She was known for her Chhath songs and had received the Padma Bhushan award. At the age of 72, Sinha had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018 and was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi on October 27.

Her son, Anshuman Sinha, confirmed the news on Instagram, where he had been sharing updates about her health. He expressed that the prayers and love of many would always be with his mother, noting that Chhathi Maiya had called her to herself and that she was no longer with them in physical form. Anshuman also shared a touching photo of his mother from her official Instagram account.

Sharda Sinha Died

Folk singer Sharda Sinha passed away on Tuesday at AIIMS Delhi after being on ventilator support for several days. The Padma Bhushan awardee was renowned for her Chhath songs and had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018. Her son, Anshuman Sinha, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, where he often updated followers about her health.

Alongside a photo of his mother from her official Instagram, Anshuman expressed in Hindi, “Your prayers and love will always be with my mother. Chhathi Maiya has called her to herself. She is no longer with us in physical form.”

Condolences Pour In for Sharda Sinha

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his sorrow over the passing of Sharda Sinha, saying, “I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Shrimati Sharda Sinha ji. She was a gifted folk singer who popularized the Bhojpuri language. Her songs will resonate with audiences for generations.

With her passing, the world of folk music has lost a significant voice. During this difficult time, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family and fans. Om Shanti!”

Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his thoughts, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Sharda Sinha ji, whose melodious voice elevated Indian music for over fifty years. Known as Bihar Kokila, she brought Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs to the forefront and continued to enchant audiences as a playback singer in films.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was closely monitoring her health, as confirmed by AIIMS Delhi in a previous post. Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited AIIMS the previous night to assess Ms. Sinha’s condition and engaged with senior health officials to ensure she received top-notch care. He also spoke with her son, Anshuman, during his visit.

About Sharda Sinha

Sharda Sinha was a highly esteemed musician from Bihar, renowned for her extensive contributions to Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Magahi music. Her songs for the Chhath festival are beloved classics, and she continued to perform at these events until recently.

In addition to her folk music, Sharda gained recognition for her work in Hindi films, including popular tracks in Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun. She also contributed to Anurag Kashyap’s cult classic, Gangs of Wasseypur, where her song “Taar Bijli” became a major hit.

Honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, she was also a recipient of the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1991.

Tragically, just weeks ago, Sharda lost her husband, Braj Kishore Sinha, after he suffered a brain hemorrhage from a fall. The couple celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary earlier this year.
