PM Modi to Be Sworn in for Historic Third Term on Saturday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in for a historic third term on Saturday, becoming the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this milestone. After submitting his resignation along with his cabinet to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he was asked to stay on until the swearing-in ceremony.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats in the recent election, falling short of the 272 majority mark. However, the party will rely on the 53 seats won by its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners to form the government.
In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Modi retained his Lok Sabha seat by defeating Congress candidate Ajay Rai by a margin of less than 1.5 lakh votes, marking his third consecutive win from the temple town.

BJP Targets 370 Seats but Faces Strong Opposition
The BJP aimed for an ambitious target of 370 seats (over 400 with NDA partners) but faced strong resistance from the Congress-led INDIA bloc. The opposition alliance secured 232 seats, outperforming exit polls and significantly reducing the BJP’s lead in key states.
Despite setbacks, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party, thanks to strong performances in several states. They won 20 out of 21 seats in Odisha, 21 out of 25 in Andhra Pradesh, 29 out of 29 in Madhya Pradesh, and 30 out of 40 in Bihar, which helped balance their losses elsewhere.
A significant breakthrough for the BJP came in Kerala, where they won their first-ever Lok Sabha seat. Traditionally weak in the southern states, the BJP’s victories in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, along with doubling their tally in Telangana to eight seats, signal a shift in their southern strategy.
However, the BJP did not win any seats in Tamil Nadu for the second consecutive election, where the ruling DMK and INDIA bloc allies swept all 39 seats.
