The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has introduced a new Social Media Policy to regulate content on social media platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube. This policy is designed to set clear rules for what can and cannot be posted online and to take legal action against those who violate these rules.
One of the key aspects of this policy is that posting content considered “anti-national” is now a serious crime. If someone is found guilty of posting such content, they could face severe punishment, ranging from three years in prison to a life sentence.
Before this policy, similar offenses were handled under specific sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which deals with issues like privacy violations and cyberterrorism.
Social Media Policy also addresses the posting of obscene or defamatory content. If someone shares material online that is offensive or damages someone’s reputation, they could face criminal defamation charges. This highlights the importance of using social media responsibly and the serious legal consequences of misusing these platforms, according to the official statement from the government.

On Tuesday, Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet approved the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, developed by the state’s information department.

New Social Media Policy also includes provisions for life imprisonment for those who create and share content that is deemed anti-national, obscene, or objectionable.

UP New Social Media Policy Payment Limits
The government has introduced a new social media policy to encourage the promotion of its schemes, initiatives, and achievements on social media. This means that influencers and social media users are being given the chance to share content related to government programs, and in return, they can earn money through advertisements.
Under this policy, social media influencers can earn up to Rs 8 lakh per month by sharing and promoting government schemes on their platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (formerly known as Twitter).
The policy also creates new job opportunities for social media influencers, allowing them to make a living by working with the government to spread awareness about its programs.
The policy sets specific earning limits for influencers based on the platform they use. For example, on X, influencers can earn up to Rs 5 lakh per month, while on Facebook, the limit is Rs 4 lakh, and on Instagram, it’s Rs 3 lakh. On YouTube, influencers can earn up to Rs 8 lakh for videos, Rs 7 lakh for shorts, Rs 6 lakh for podcasts, and Rs 4 lakh for other types of content.
To manage all these advertisements and promotions, the government has selected a digital agency called ‘V-Form.’ This agency will handle the creation and distribution of videos, tweets, posts, and reels on behalf of the government. This means that ‘V-Form’ will be responsible for ensuring that the content reaches a wide audience and is shared effectively across various social media platforms.
