Authorities responded swiftly to the scene, with officers and emergency services arriving around 10:23 AM following reports of an active shooter. CNN reported seeing a patient being airlifted from the school by medical helicopter.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that law enforcement and fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to handle the situation. They added that the situation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Barrow County Schools stated that the school has been secured by law enforcement and that students are being safely released. Further details are yet to be provided.

Georgia High School Shooting Claims Two Lives

On September 4, a shooting at a high school in northern Georgia resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, according to authorities. This tragic event occurred more than a month after students in Barrow County returned to school on August 1.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident was an active shooter situation. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Apalachee High School around 10:30 AM local time, leading to a lockdown as a safety measure. By 11:30 AM, students were safely released, as confirmed by a Barrow County School District spokesperson to The New York Post.

Apalachee High School on Lockdown After Shooting

Following reports of gunfire, Apalachee High School in Barrow County is on a hard lockdown. The school advised parents not to come to the campus while law enforcement works to secure the area, as reported by Athens Banner-Herald. Other schools in the county are under a “soft lockdown,” according to ABC News.

Several people sustained gunshot wounds on Wednesday morning, with two individuals being transported by air ambulance. Although victims have been taken to the hospital, law enforcement has not yet released additional details.

At least one person is in custody. Photos from the scene show numerous police vehicles on the school’s grounds, and officials have instructed students to gather in the athletic field for safety.

School District and Georgia Governor Address Shooting Incident

The Barrow County School District has issued an urgent message regarding the ongoing situation at Apalachee High School. They advise parents not to visit the school and note that students cannot be released during the lockdown. The district will provide updates as soon as the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office gives the all-clear for dismissal.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has announced that all available state resources are being deployed to handle the incident. He calls on Georgians to join him in praying for the safety of everyone involved, both in Barrow County and throughout the state.

The FBI Atlanta is also involved, working alongside local and federal agencies to support the response and gather information.
