Zhuang’s family in China contacted his Utah school after receiving alarming images that hinted at a forcible kidnapping. Contrarily, Zhuang’s host family in the US informed the police that they had seen him and were unaware of any kidnapping.
Despite continuous threats to Zhuang’s safety, his family paid approximately $80,000 in ransom money to a Chinese bank account following the scammer’s demands.
During a month-long ordeal, the scammers coerced Zhuang into complying with their instructions, threatening harm to his family in China. They instructed him to isolate himself in the wilderness and send staged photos that appeared as if he were kidnapped. Fortunately, the Riverdale police intervened and rescued him from the woods.
