Mamata Banerjee, born on January 5, 1955, in Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, stands as a notable figure in politics, currently serving as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Breaking historical ground, she became the first female to hold this position in 2011.

Raised in a humble neighborhood in south Calcutta, Mamata encountered challenges early in life due to her father’s passing. Despite this, she remained resilient, pursuing her education and obtaining multiple degrees, including a bachelor’s in law and a master’s in arts from the University of Calcutta.

In 2011, she made history by becoming the chief minister of West Bengal, putting an end to the 34-year-long CPI(M) regime, one of the world’s lengthiest elected governments. Having led the state for two consecutive terms, the 2021 election poses a new challenge for her.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained significant support in the state during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, encroaching on her political territory. To add to the complexity, the Left-Congress-ISF alliance has emerged, further complicating the political landscape for her.

Mamata Banerjee Political Journey

Mamata Banerjee entered national politics in 1984, winning a seat in the Indian parliament’s lower house (Lok Sabha) for her home district in south Kolkata. Despite facing defeat in 1989, she regained her seat in 1991 and continued winning in subsequent elections until 2009.

During her time in parliament, she took on important roles within the party and the national government, holding three cabinet-level ministerial positions.

Even as she rose on the national stage, Mamata maintained strong connections to her home state, earning the affectionate nickname “Didi” (Big Sister) from her followers. Known for her simplicity and outspokenness, she gained support by staying true to her humble beginnings and expressing her opinions, especially against the long-standing communist rule in West Bengal.

In the late 1990s, dissatisfied with perceived corruption in the Congress Party, Banerjee founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in 1997. While the party had limited success nationally, it gained momentum in West Bengal.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2006 when Banerjee staged a 25-day hunger strike against the forced acquisition of land for an automobile factory, revitalizing her political career and boosting AITC’s support in the 2009 national elections.

Her focus shifted to the 2011 state parliamentary elections, aiming to end decades-long communist rule in West Bengal. Her popularity soared as she championed causes like opposing land acquisition, advocating for human rights, and protecting women and children.

The AITC emerged victorious in the 2011 elections, securing over three-fifths of the state legislature seats. On May 20, Mamata Banerjee was sworn in as the chief minister, signaling the end of communist dominance in the state.

Apart from her political career, Mamata made notable contributions to English and Bengali literature, showcasing her talent as a prolific writer. She wrote more than twenty books, encompassing nonfiction pieces such as “Struggle for Existence” (1998) and “The Slaughter of Democracy” (2006), along with a collection of poems.

Mamata’s political path is defined by her determination, strong connection with the grassroots, and the historic achievement of being West Bengal’s first female chief minister. Her tenure brought about substantial political transformations in the state.
