According to an official statement, the Parliament session is expected to end by July 3, depending on government business needs. All Lok Sabha MPs will take their oath during this session.

President Droupadi Murmu will address both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on June 27, following the appointment of the new Speaker. Her speech is anticipated to outline the government’s likely plans for the next five years.

Typically, the Lok Sabha Speaker is elected during the first meeting of the new MPs. Until then, a pro-tem Speaker, often the most experienced MP, presides over initial sessions. The pro-tem Speaker oversees the election of the new Speaker and deputy Speaker.

Lok Sabha Speaker Elections

The Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected on June 26, following the start of the first Parliament session after the recent Lok Sabha elections. Members can submit motions supporting candidates until noon on June 25, as announced by the Lok Sabha secretariat.

The government has yet to announce its candidate for Speaker, adding to the suspense surrounding the election.

According to a Lok Sabha bulletin, members can submit written notices supporting a candidate for Speaker until noon on June 25.

The initial two days of the session will focus on the oath-taking ceremony for newly-elected members, with June 26 scheduled for the Speaker election.

Upcoming Parliament Session

The upcoming Parliament session, the first after the Lok Sabha elections, will run from June 24 to July 3, as confirmed by Kirren Rijiju, the new Parliamentary Affairs Minister. The initial three days of the session will be dedicated to newly elected MPs taking their oaths or affirmations and electing the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The session is scheduled to conclude on July 3.

Following President Droupadi Murmu’s address on June 27, Prime Minister Modi is anticipated to introduce his council of ministers to Parliament. He will also participate in discussions on the Motion of Thanks regarding the President’s address in both Houses of Parliament.

Lok Sabha Speaker Selection in Modi 3.0 Government

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured the largest number of seats but fell short of the 272 needed for a majority. With 240 seats, BJP formed the government with support from allies like Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Janata Dal-United (JDU), Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV), Shiv Sena, among others.

While most ministerial portfolios have been assigned, the Speaker’s position remains undecided. Will BJP retain the Speaker’s role, as it did with Om Birla in the previous term, or will an ally be chosen this time? Let’s explore.

During the 17th Lok Sabha, BJP held an absolute majority with 303 seats and elected Om Birla as Speaker. Interestingly, no Deputy Speaker was elected throughout the five-year term. According to Article 93 of the Constitution, the Lok Sabha is required to choose Speakers and Deputy Speakers whenever these positions become vacant, without specifying a deadline.
