SM Krishna, a distinguished politician and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away early Tuesday in Bengaluru at the age of 92 after battling a prolonged illness. Reports confirm that the veteran leader, who had been hospitalized in October, breathed his last at home.

Born as Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, he is survived by his wife, Prema, and two daughters, Shambhavi and Malavika.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting SM Krishna’s immense contributions. He remarked, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri S.M. Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, whose legacy of leadership and public service has left an indelible mark on our state and nation. His vision and dedication shaped Karnataka’s progress, and his corporate approach to governance endeared him to many.”

Kharge also acknowledged Krishna’s pivotal role in positioning Bengaluru as a global city, adding, “As we remember him, we not only grieve the loss of a towering political figure but also celebrate a life dedicated to serving the people. May his soul rest in peace, and his contributions continue to inspire generations to come.”

SM Krishna, a towering figure in Indian politics, served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004 and Maharashtra’s Governor from 2004 to 2008. Known for his pivotal role in establishing Bengaluru as a global IT hub, Krishna’s leadership has left an enduring impact on Karnataka’s progress.

Born in Somanahalli, Mandya, Krishna had an illustrious academic journey. A law graduate, he studied in the United States as a Fulbright Scholar, earning degrees from Southern Methodist University, Texas, and The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.

Krishna’s political career spanned decades, starting with his nearly 50-year association with the Congress Party. He held key roles such as Deputy Chief Minister (1993-1994) and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, leading the party to victory in the 1999 assembly polls. Under his tenure as Chief Minister, Bengaluru experienced a technological boom, earning its title as “India’s Silicon Valley.”

In 2009, Krishna took on the role of External Affairs Minister in the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh, where he further cemented his reputation as a seasoned statesman.
