Timeline of Events on Night of the Doctor Murder
On August 8, Roy and his friend visited RG Kar Hospital to check on the friend’s brother, who was admitted there. Around 11:15 PM, they left the hospital and bought alcohol, which they consumed on the road. They then attempted to visit Sonagachi, a red light area in north Kolkata, but were unsuccessful. Next, they headed to Chetla, another red light district in South Kolkata.
During their journey, they molested a girl on the street. Once in Chetla, Roy’s friend engaged with a woman while Roy stayed outside, talking to his girlfriend via video call. During the call, Roy requested and received nude photos from her.
Afterward, they returned to the hospital. Roy proceeded to the trauma center on the fourth floor. At 4:03 AM, CCTV footage captured Roy walking to the corridor near the seminar hall on the third floor. He entered the seminar hall, where the victim was sleeping, and strangled her. Following this, he sexually assaulted the victim and left the scene to visit his friend, Anupam Dutta, who is a Kolkata Police officer.
The CBI confirmed Roy and his friend’s presence at each location through their call data records (CDRs).
CBI Probes Alleged Cover-Up in Trainee Doctor’s Death
Sanjay Roy’s mobile phone reportedly contained a large amount of pornographic material, including videos showing incestuous acts between siblings. This discovery led the CBI to conduct a psychological evaluation of Roy, and he also underwent a lie detector test on Sunday.
Roy, 33, was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10, a day after a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College. His arrest was linked to a Bluetooth device discovered near the doctor’s body, and CCTV footage showed him on the third floor of the hospital where the seminar hall is located.
It is alleged that Roy had close ties with some senior Kolkata Police officers. The CBI informed the Supreme Court that the crime scene had been tampered with by the time they took over the investigation, suggesting that the local police might have tried to cover up the rape and murder of the doctor.
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation from Kolkata Police to the CBI.
