Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in for his third consecutive term as India’s prime minister on Sunday. The 73-year-old leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and his ministers took the oath of office, administered by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The new Modi 3.0 cabinet includes 72 ministers: 30 cabinet ministers, 5 ministers of state with independent charge, and 36 ministers of state.
Supporters enthusiastically cheered and chanted “Modi, Modi” as the prime minister, dressed in a white kurta and blue half-jacket, took his oath.
Senior ministers like Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Piyush Goyal also took their oaths after Modi. Their specific roles will be announced later.
The new cabinet features seven former chief ministers, including Modi. The other former chief ministers are Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Rajnath Singh (Uttar Pradesh), Manohar Lal Khattar (Haryana), Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam), H. D. Kumaraswamy (Karnataka), and Jitan Ram Manjhi (Bihar).
In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won 240 seats, becoming the largest party. They will rely on support from regional parties like the Telugu Desam Party and Janata Dal (United) to govern the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre.
Dignitaries from neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region attended the ceremony, including Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
