Mother’s First Name Mandatory on Govt Documents

The Maharashtra Cabinet recently announced a new requirement for government documents, making it mandatory to include the mother’s first name alongside the applicant’s first name and the father’s name and surname. This decision, made in the presence of CM Eknath Shinde, has been documented on the official website of the Maharashtra government.

Starting from May 1, 2014, individuals must follow this new format when registering for government documents like birth certificates, school records, property papers, Aadhar cards, PAN cards, etc. However, orphans are exempt from this requirement.

Married women will continue using the existing system, where their name is followed by their husband’s first name and surname.

The Women and Child Development department see this decision as a way to give mothers more recognition.

Furthermore, the state public health department is considering including the mother’s name in birth or death registrations, pending consultation with the Centre.

Additionally, the cabinet gave the green light to reduce stamp duty for residents of BDD chawls and slums, and approved a scheme to build permanent houses for families of workers from 58 defunct textile mills in the city. These houses will be constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with the state housing department allocating ₹3000 crore for the project.
