LK Advani’s Political Journey
LK Advani was born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi (now in Pakistan). He became involved in politics at a young age, joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) when he was just 14 years old. The RSS is a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization. After India’s partition in 1947, Advani and his family moved to India, like many others who were affected by the division.
In 1951, Advani joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), a political party founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. This was the beginning of his formal political career. Advani made a significant move in 1970 when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament. Just two years later, in 1972, he was made the president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.
One of the most significant events in Advani’s career came during the 1975 Emergency, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India. Advani and his colleague, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, were arrested during this period due to their opposition to the Emergency.
In 1977, after the Emergency was lifted, the Janata Party, led by Morarji Desai, came to power. Advani was appointed the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the new government. This was an important moment in Advani’s political career as he held a key ministerial position.
In 1980, Advani played a crucial role in founding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP was formed after the Bharatiya Jana Sangh merged with other parties. Advani’s leadership was key to the growth of the BJP over the following years.
Advani is particularly recognized for transforming the BJP from a small party with only two seats in the 1984 elections into a powerful political force by the 1990s. One of the major events that helped the BJP grow was Advani’s leadership in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. This movement advocated for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, a historic city in India. This issue attracted a lot of support from Hindu communities and helped the BJP gain popularity.
Advani served as the president of the BJP three times during his political career. He also held important positions in the government. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a prominent leader of the BJP.
In 2009, Advani was chosen as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in the general elections. However, the BJP did not win the election, and Advani was not able to become the Prime Minister.
Throughout his career, Advani has played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of India, particularly with the rise of the BJP and its growing influence in Indian politics.
