Hartalika Teej 2024 History

The term “Hartalika” comes from two Sanskrit words: “Harat,” which means abduction, and “Aalika,” meaning female friend. According to legend, Goddess Parvati, who was deeply devoted to Lord Shiva, was taken away by her friends to the forest. At that time, she wasn’t ready to accept her father’s proposal for her to marry Lord Vishnu.

During Hartalika Teej, Parvati created a clay idol of Lord Shiva and worshipped him. Her devotion pleased Lord Shiva, who promised to marry her. Eventually, Parvati’s father, Himalaya, gave his consent. Observing the Hartalika Teej fast is believed to bring the fulfillment of devotees’ wishes.

Hartalika Teej 2024 Significance

Hartalika Teej is a special festival that focuses on friendship, devotion, and the joy of married life. For married women, this day is particularly meaningful as they seek blessings for their husbands’ health and long life.

On Hartalika Teej, women take part in several important traditions. One key practice is fasting, where they abstain from food and drink for the day. They also create idols of Shiva and Parvati from clay or sand. These idols are then worshipped with great care and reverence.

As Hartalika Teej 2024 approaches, these customs become even more significant. The festival celebrates the divine bond between Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing the desires of individuals for a happy and prosperous marriage.

Hartalika Teej 2024 Rituals

The day starts with an early morning bath using a blend of sesame and amla powder, followed by donning fine clothes and jewelry. Women then take a vow, known as Sankalp, to observe the Hartalika Vrat in honor of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The Puja begins with the worship of Lord Ganesh, a traditional part of Hindu rituals. This is followed by the Shodashopachara Puja, a sixteen-step ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. During the Puja, the story of Hartalika is recounted, highlighting the festival’s significance.

Hartalika Teej Katha

Once upon a time, Goddess Parvati, daughter of King Himavan, wished to marry Lord Shiva. To win his love, she endured many years of intense penance and hardships. Despite her father’s efforts to marry her off to Lord Vishnu, Parvati remained devoted to Shiva and continued her penance in a forest.

To protect her from her father’s plans, a close friend took Parvati to a dense forest, where she continued her devotion with even more dedication. Impressed by her unwavering faith, Lord Shiva finally appeared and accepted her as his consort. This story is celebrated during the Hartalika Teej festival, where women honor Goddess Parvati’s devotion and pray for a happy married life.

On Hartalika Teej, women create idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from clay or sand, observe a strict fast, and perform the Puja with devotion. The story of Parvati’s devotion is recounted during the ritual, symbolizing the strength and dedication of women in love and marriage.

By celebrating Hartalika Teej, women seek Goddess Parvati’s blessings for a joyful and prosperous married life, just as Parvati was blessed by Lord Shiva.

Hartalika Teej 2024 Regional Variations

In South India, especially in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the festival is celebrated as Gowri Habba, where women observe the Swarna Gowri Vratha. In contrast, in North India—specifically in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand—Hartalika Teej is celebrated with great enthusiasm. This festival is one of the three major Teej festivals, alongside Hariyali Teej and Kajari Teej.
