World AIDS Day 2024 History

In 1988, James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, who were public information officers for the AIDS Global Program of the World Health Organization, took the initiative to create World AIDS Day. This day was established to raise awareness about the widespread HIV/AIDS pandemic. Back then, approximately 90,000 to 150,000 people were HIV-positive.

They pitched the idea to Dr. Johnathan Mann, the Director of the AIDS Global Program, and he approved the date of December 1 for this important event. Over the years, thanks to advancements in research and collaborations with medical partners, the care for individuals living with HIV has significantly improved.

Need of World AIDS Day 2024 for AIDS Awareness

Raising awareness about AIDS is crucial because HIV, the virus causing AIDS, currently has no cure. However, with proper education, especially in rural areas, one can manage the disease effectively.

While HIV used to be an overwhelming chronic condition, advancements in prevention, diagnosis, and care, including for opportunistic infections, now allow people with HIV to lead long and healthy lives. In India, 2019 saw 58.96 thousand AIDS-related deaths and 69.22 thousand new HIV infections.

Globally, in 2021, 14.6 lakh people (13 lakh adults and 1.6 lakh children under 15) contracted HIV, and 6.5 lakh HIV patients succumbed to the disease in the same year. As of 2021, approximately 3.84 crore people (3.67 crore adults and 17 lakh children under 15) were reported as HIV-infected, with 54% being women and girls, primarily in low- and middle-income nations.

Key global HIV facts according to UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS) include that in 2021, almost 85% of patients were aware of their HIV status. By the end of 2021, 75% of people had access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and 81% of pregnant individuals with HIV had access to ART to prevent transmission to their babies during pregnancy and childbirth.

Estimates suggest a decline in new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths globally to 4.4 and 3.9 per 100,000 population, respectively, by 2025, followed by a 90% reduction in both by 2030. To achieve this, there’s a need for widespread global awareness campaigns focused on education, treatment, and prevention.

Success of Red Ribbon

In India, the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) has played a crucial role in lowering new HIV infections and deaths related to AIDS. Thanks to effective global awareness campaigns starting in 1988, there has been a 32% drop in new cases since 2010 and a substantial 68% decrease in AIDS-related deaths since 2004.

World AIDS Day 2024 Slogan

The official theme for World AIDS Day 2024 is “Take the rights path: My health, my right!.” This highlights the vital role communities play in shaping the response to HIV and reaching the goal of ending AIDS by 2030. Communities have been pioneers in HIV prevention, treatment, and care, and their leadership is crucial for developing effective and lasting solutions.

Here are some additional slogans reflecting the spirit of World AIDS Day 2024:

  1. “Ending AIDS is within our reach, together.”
  2. “Putting communities at the forefront of the HIV fight.”
  3. “Empowering communities to take the lead against AIDS.”
  4. “Uniting for a world without AIDS.”
  5. “Following communities towards a brighter, AIDS-free future.”

These slogans emphasize the significance of community involvement and cooperation in tackling the HIV pandemic. They aim to inspire hope and action, reinforcing the idea that by working together, we can create a world free from AIDS.

Prevention of HIV

Emphasizing the age-old saying “Prevention is better than cure,” there are various steps to stay safe:

  1. Practice safe intercourse.
  2. Get tested regularly and seek treatment for STDs.
  3. Consider having a single sexual partner.
  4. Say no to risky behaviors like needle sharing.
  5. Opt for HIV testing.
  6. Explore preventive medications such as pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis.
