Under Blitz Bazawule’s direction, the remake of The Color Purple nabbed the top prize at a televised event, snagging three more awards along the way. Earlier in the week, it had already grabbed seven awards out of 16 nominations, making a grand total of 11 NAACP Image Awards.
Oprah Winfrey, the producer, made a surprise appearance to hand over the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award to Usher, who got the President’s Award. She thanked the audience for backing The Color Purple.
Danielle Brooks, who stars in the film, accepted the Best Motion Picture award alongside Fantasia Barrino, named Best Actress, and Taraji P. Henson, honored as Best Supporting Actress. Brooks thanked the crew and cast, giving a nod to those who came before, especially the 1985 adaptation with Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg.
Barrino, visibly touched, shared her initial doubts about her role but found it fulfilling, highlighting its relevance and impact. Queen Latifah, hosting for the second time, mixed humor with serious issues like Hollywood’s pay gap and encouraged voting.
During the event, Taraji P. Henson spoke out against pay inequality, urging others to speak up. Damson Idris, awarded Best Drama Actor, shared a funny story and reflected on the award’s significance.
India Ria Amarteifio, portraying Queen Charlotte, won Best Drama Actress and expressed gratitude. Quinta Brunson, winning Best Comedy Actress, joked about losing her earrings before thanking everyone.
New Edition entered the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame, with Ronnie DeVoe thanking supporters. Usher received the President’s Award, delivering a heartfelt speech. Poet Amanda Gorman also received recognition.
The event, just before Queen Latifah’s birthday, featured performances, surprises, and a tribute to the late Andra Day. Winners from non-televised categories were announced throughout the week, celebrating Black excellence across various fields.
