The film, co-produced by Kangana’s Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios, was initially scheduled for release on September 6. However, without the censor certificate, Zee Entertainment approached the Bombay High Court, seeking intervention to allow the film’s release. The ongoing legal proceedings have caused further delays, and with no favorable ruling, the film’s release is now postponed indefinitely.
On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court declined urgent relief following a directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which instructed the CBFC to address objections to the film before granting certification.

About Emergency Movie
The film centers around the Emergency declared by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, a highly debated 21-month period seen as one of India’s darkest moments in democratic history. Kangana Ranaut portrays Indira Gandhi and explores major events like the Emergency, her assassination, and the rise of the Khalistan movement led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the 1980s.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Milind Soman. The screenplay, written by Ranaut, highlights her growing role in filmmaking.
Originally set for release last year, the film faced delays due to scheduling around the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. It was postponed to June 2024, then September, but ongoing certification issues with the CBFC have made the release date uncertain.
What Are The Objections Against Emergency?
The movie has sparked controversy, particularly among the Sikh community. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which oversees Sikh religious affairs, claims the film distorts historical facts and portrays the Sikh community inaccurately. After the trailer’s release, both the SGPC and the Akal Takht called for an immediate ban on the movie.
The SGPC issued a legal notice to the producers, stating that certain scenes in the trailer were “anti-Sikh” and offended the community’s sentiments. The organization has also approached the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as well as the CBFC, requesting a ban on the film.
