Winter Vacation in Delhi Schools: The Delhi government recently corrected a mistake in a directive regarding the extension of winter vacations in schools across the national capital. The Department of Education clarified that the earlier order, which extended the winter break, was issued by error and has now been withdrawn. The decision on the matter is expected to be made on January 8.
According to ANI, the revised order, dated January 6, 2024 (Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18), states, “The extension of Winter Vacation mentioned in the previous order is now withdrawn with immediate effect. Further instructions on this matter may be issued in due course.”
The earlier decision by the Arvind Kejriwal government to extend the winter break until January 10 for all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in the national capital territory (NCT) was based on concerns about extreme cold waves and the IMD’s yellow alert.
Winter Vacation in Delhi Schools
The winter break for Delhi schools, initially planned to end on January 6 and classes to resume on January 8, faced a change in Delhi. The city is currently in the grip of severe cold waves, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert due to anticipated dense fog, light rainfall, and a drop in temperature over the next few days.
In response to these conditions, the Delhi government, which had previously extended the winter vacation to January 10, has revoked this decision. This extension was applied to all government-aided and unaided accredited private Delhi schools in the national capital territory (NCT) due to the combination of extreme cold waves and the IMD’s yellow alert.
Simultaneously, the Gautam Buddh Nagar government, considering the dense fog and cold weather, has declared the closure of all schools in Noida and Greater Noida for classes up to 8th grade until January 14. This directive, issued by district Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar, is applicable to institutions accredited by the state board, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and others.

Delhi experienced chilly weather recently, with the national capital registering a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius on January 2, slightly higher than usual. Previously, the temperature had dropped to 6 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The RWFC Delhi forecasts indicate that dense to very dense fog may occur at some locations, leading to cold to severely cold conditions in certain areas of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi until January 7.
Early Winter Break in Delhi Schools
The Delhi government took a proactive step in addressing air pollution by adjusting the Delhi school winter break schedule. Instead of the usual December break, Delhi schools will now have an early winter break from November 9 to 18 due to severe air pollution levels. This decision aims to prioritize the well-being of students and tackle the challenges posed by high pollution levels.
