National Mathematics Day 2023 History
Renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, known for his impactful contributions in India and globally, played a key role in the inception of Mathematics Day in the country. Born in 1887 to an Iyengar Brahmin family in Erode, Tamil Nadu, Ramanujan showed exceptional talent in trigonometry by the age of 12, despite limited formal education, and developed numerous theorems.
Leaving home at 14, Ramanujan joined Pachaiyappa’s College in Madras. Although he excelled in mathematics, he faced challenges in other subjects and couldn’t complete a Fellow of Arts degree. Despite poverty, Ramanujan opted for independent mathematical research.
Chennai’s mathematicians noticed his talent, leading to a clerk position at Madras Port Trust in 1912, secured by Ramaswamy Iyer, founder of the Indian Mathematical Society. Ramanujan began sharing his work with British mathematicians, and in 1913, GH Hardy, a Cambridge mathematician, invited him to London, impressed by his theorems.
In 1914, Ramanujan went to Britain, where Hardy helped him enroll at Trinity College, Cambridge. Elected to the London Mathematical Society in 1917, Ramanujan achieved further success by becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1918, making him one of the youngest individuals to attain this prestigious status.
