West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has given a strict warning to the police after protests erupted over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman who was training to be a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident has deeply shocked and saddened the community.
Mamata Banerjee made it clear that if the police cannot solve the case by Sunday, August 18, she will hand it over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is a higher authority known for handling serious cases in India. She emphasized how serious the situation is, describing it as “extremely painful” and “shocking.”
The Chief Minister also shared that the victim’s parents believe that someone from within the hospital may have been involved in the crime, adding to the gravity of the situation.
To get to the bottom of the case, the police have brought in a dog squad, video analysis team, and forensic experts to help with the investigation. Banerjee is determined to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are brought to justice quickly.
Mamata Banerjee Warns of CBI in Kolkata Doctor’s Murder Case
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday that the case of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police cannot solve it by Sunday.
“If the police fail to resolve this by Sunday, we will transfer the case to the CBI. However, the central agency’s success rate is quite low,” Banerjee stated, according to PTI, after visiting the doctor’s home.
Meanwhile, protests over the incident are ongoing. The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, has resigned from his position and government service.
“This incident is deeply troubling, and those responsible should face immediate punishment. We’re pushing for a fast-tracked trial to ensure a swift judicial process. It’s shocking that this happened even with nurses and security staff present in the hospital,” Mamata Banerjee said.
“I informed the police that the victim’s parents believe an insider was involved. As a result, we’ve removed the principal, Head of Department, Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal (MSVP), and the ASP from their positions at the hospital,” she added.
